When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed at Work – Humor

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, I Just Don't Get It, My Life Musings

overwhelmed at workOne day during a lunch hour I decided to do some quick shopping at Motts, a convenient little dime store. I went in and was looking around when I felt the need to make a bathroom visit.

I looked around the store and didn’t see any signs for a restroom so I went to the front of the store to ask. At the front there was one girl working the checkout line and no other employees in sight. The line was long but I got in line anyway, not wanting to blurt my question in front of everyone.

I could clearly see the girl was getting frustrated. She kept looking at the long line and as she did so, she kept making mistakes costing her even more time per customer. I felt her grief as she was becoming overwhelmed.

I wanted to tell her that she just needed to concentrate on one customer at a time and not worry about the length of the line.

By the time it was “my turn”, I leaned over and said, “Do you have a restroom in the store?”

She replied, “No we don’t have a restroom. We DO have a post office in the back”

I said, “I don’t want to mail it anywhere”

At that she busted out laughing and said, “I don’t know why I said that!” At that I took the opportunity to tell her to slow down and just take care of one person at a time and everything will end up fine.

When you are feeling overwhelmed, just step back, take a breath and realize that you can only do so much. Nothing is earth shattering. Which brings up story number 2….

It was very early and this office supply store had just opened. I just needed some printer ink so decided to just go in and make a quick purchase.

Once inside I was assaulted with all the glamour and glitz of office goodie items like new software in it’s bright new boxes, beautiful dayplanners all gleaming with their new leather covers in camel, mauve, anddusty blue,  and paper so white I needed sunglasses.

YES, I do get excited about fresh white paper ready to hold all my brilliant thoughts placed on it with my new multi-colored gel pens that just flow across the paper with ease…. sigh…. anyways….

When I finally made it to the counter I realized that I was the only customer in the store.  There was a freshly dressed young man behind the counter with what seemed like a genuine smile. As he is ringing me up, the phone rings. He says politely, “Excuse me” an answers the phone.

I hear him say, “Yes, we do usually carry that but I’m not sure if we have that Ma’am. Let me run check. May I place you on hold?”

He turns back to me, finishes my purchase, bags my items and says “Thank You for shopping…(insert store name). He then turns back to the phone and says, “I’m sorry Ma’am, I couldn’t find any in the store or the back room. Please check back later.”

Now this young man was clearly NOT being overwhelmed with customers. Not only did he have time to look in the store AND the back as I am the only customer in the store, but he could have easily called another employee to look. Maybe HE WAS feeling overwhelmed. I can’t say.

Remember to take some time. No rush…

Twitter: When someone doesn’t follow or unfollows

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, I Just Don't Get It

I hear a lot of complaints about getting offended when someone doesn’t follow. My idea of following someone means I want to hear what they have to say. Do they have to follow me back? No. Plain and simple. Maybe my subjects aren’t interesting to them or maybe they are too busy with a niche focus. It doesn’t matter.

If someone follows me, I don’t always follow back either. Maybe they have recipes for catfish chum that I don’t care to know about. Maybe they have a strong political view different from my own. Maybe their values are not the same as mine. Whatever the reason, it’s not a personal affront. It’s just a personal choice.

No one can please everyone. I am VERY thankful for my followers. I hope I help them in any small way, BUT… I don’t always follow everyone back. Just last week I had several new followers who were either promoting affiliate links, were on the “dark side”, were into self promotion to the arrogant stage, or other offensive subjects.

Don’t be offended when someone doesn’t “follow you back”. Focus more on what you have to offer to people who “want” your twitters. Go ahead and follow those who have something you want to hear! They don’t have to follow you for you to hear it, right? It’s not a competition. It’s a great way to receive information and a great way for you to share information.

Don’t be a “hiney” about unfollowing someone who is not “following you back”. You might miss out on some great stuff.

Why You Should Start a Blog

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, Just for Women

For several months I have been pushing the idea that people should start blogging. Some have taken my advice and put up blogs, but I think blogging is something that many, many people could benefit from. Here are some of the ways you could use a blog.

1. Promoting your business: This is the most common reason to start a blog. You can post articles (300-1,200 words), shorter posts of 100-150 words, link to other articles or items of interest in your industry or topic, or embed videos related to your business or topic. Or you can do all of these things.

Is the Limited Liability Company the Right Entity for Your Business?

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, Just for Women

Should you operate your business as a corporation? Or is there another, simpler alternative? You’ve probably noticed that in the past decade there are more and more businesses with their names followed by the letters “LLC” instead of “Inc.”. “LLC” stands for Limited Liability Company, is the newest type of legal entity that exists in the United States, and for many entrepreneurs it is the ideal marriage between the tax advantages of the limited partnership and the limited liability feature of the corporation. Now available in all 50 states—even to non-U.S. citizens–most likely the LLC should have a key place in your business structure.

When it comes to legal entities for conducting business, limited liability companies are Read more…

Increased Web site Traffic – the Web 2.0 Way

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, Just for Women

Increased web site traffic until recently covered a whole gamut of techniques that fell short of embracing the brave new world of social media. It was almost as if Web 2.0 was for ‘play’ whilst the serious ‘work’ of the internet would involve Pay per Click, Article marketing, safelisting etc.

Not any more. Web 2.0 is the ‘golden fleece’ of increased web site traffic. What makes it such a powerful way of influencing huge numbers of people is that it’s not about ‘pitching’ others. It’s about forming friendships and relationships which may or may not blossom into a business connection.

Diversifying Merchants For Successful Home Businesses

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, Just for Women

Many online successful home businesses use affiliate programs as the main model for making profits and with such little risk involved it is a very popular method for starting a business online. The affiliate has zero advertising costs, no product development issues, no inventory to keep up with and no overhead expenses including salaries, stores, benefits and so on. While many businesses may have their entire life’s worth on the line, the affiliate is risking nothing more then time and the costs of hosting a web site.

The one major risk an affiliate may run into is if the affiliate program they are marketing online was to go out of business themselves. For example if a webmaster or marketer spent the last five years building a business around an affiliate program and now has a thousand pages all selling products for that program and the merchant was to “go under” so will the affiliate, at least until they can find a new program that will work for the site. Where Are the Green Jobs?

Posted by - Categoriezed under: All My Gibberish, Business, I Just Don't Get It, Just for Women, My Graphic Art Gifts

Thanks to the power of Google Maps, organizations such as The Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness (CGGC), are able to research the location of green companies with green jobs and the viability of the green economy. Using small bits of data, these organizations are creating maps showing the location of green companies. A icon is used to display the pinpoint location.

Recently, we ran across studies that include maps of manufacturing companies and CleanTech companies. If a picture is worth one thousand words, these maps are worth ten thousand!

Even if you aren’t in the market for a manufacturing job or a CleanTech job, take a few minutes to click through to one of the reports listed below, or the maps. With one glance you’ll get it! Green companies exist and their numbers are growing. As funding, policies, and incentives begin to happen, these operations are going to start humming! Some percentage of these small companies will grow into household names.
